This was such a cute Valentine’s Card to create and give that I thought it would be fun to share it here on the blog. I am a woman of extremes – I am either doing the absolute least… like buying cards in bulk and not even writing names on them. Or doing the most, like these custom photo cards.
I saw this example somewhere on the internet, but it had the kid holding a lollipop. My kids eat their fair share of candy, but I knew for valentine’s day there was going to be so much candy going around that I wanted to do something a little different. So I came up with the idea to do the themed straws – and they came out awesome! So here’s what you’ll need:
- A cute kid (bonus points if you dress them in a complementary color)
- Smartphone camera
- Photo card template or canva
- A way to print your cards (either a printer + cardstock or your local printer)
- X-acto knife, scissors, or hole punch
- Straws or Lollipops
Now to create the magic:
Step 1: Get the Shot
Use your smartphone to take a photo of your kid holding their hand out. Make sure their hand isn’t right in front of their cute face. Just like this…

Step 2: Add the Photo to a Valentine’s Card
First, you’ll want to remove the background. You can easily do this on iphone by holding down on your kid’s face, select “Share,” and then select “Save Image.” Then add your image to the photo card of your choice. You can purchase the template I used here or you can create your own on a platform like Canva.
Step 3: Print Your Cards
You can either print your cards yourself at home using cardstock or get them printed at the local printer (something like Office Depot or even Walgreens and print them as photos). The template I used is 4×6. The straws I used were somewhat heavy so I wanted to go with a bigger card. If you wanted to use lollipops you could go with a smaller card.
Step 4: Attach Your Goodies
Cut a slit above and beneath your kid’s fist to slide the straw or lollipop through and voila! If you try it, would love to know how it goes!

Now, if you got to the end of this and are like… I still ain’t got time. I’ve got a “designed for you” option on the Hey Deidre Etsy shop. You can just send a photo of your kid, and I’ll add it to the template for you. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy as my youngest would say.
